-I'm being paid through an umbrella company and it seems that I'm getting paid the same as I would be if I was self-employed, only minus the umbrella company fees. But for some reason it seems that you can't just decided that you are self-employed. I'd rather not pay the umbrella company fees and just do the tax admin myself, but according to various articles on the internet, I can't be classed as self-employed. It all seems very vague and I'm not happy to be in a situation where I'm paying a company money for some basic admin. What is the situation regarding temp agency workers being self-employed and is the umbrella company really necessary?I work for Brookson Accountancy and Support services, we offer Umbrella services, Limited Company and Sole Trader options.
My advice would be to have a consultation on the best way of working based on your individual circumstances, many factors determine whether you should work through an Umbrella or set up a Limited Company and we can help with that.

You can not be deemed as self employed if you find work through an agency as you are not in control of your own work.
- You do not choose the hours you work
- You probably won't use your own tools but the tools that are supplied
- You are not finding your own work
This is complex - you need advice and it depends on the detail. Try Citizens Advice Bureau.
